K-5 Math Mentor Meeting, December 2, 2013

December 2, 2013

K-5 Math Mentor meeting

Agenda:

  • Meet and great
  • Everyday Math Interactive Teacher's Guide online opportunity.  Free pilot of 2012 edition.
  • Mathematical Practices
    • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
    • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP4 Model with mathematics.
    • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
    • CCSS.Math.Practice.MP6 Attend to precision.
    • Wednesday:
      • I will model one standard, using visuals from different classrooms to help frame the discussion in your smaller groups.
      • each math mentor will facilitate a group looking at one of the above 4 mathematical practices.
      • we will start in mixed grade level groups, K-5, to read and discuss 1 practice.  You will be looking for ways in which we already do this in classrooms and ways we might easily incorporate it into our classrooms. Create a "presentation" (video, poster, Explain Everything app, pictures, etc) that portrays what that practice is all about in a K-5 environment. This is very open ended and groups can portray the info in any way that makes sense to them.  There will be 2 groups (I hope) for each standard. We will share out from here.
      • we will then go to grade level groups to discuss how this impacts your current unit that you are teaching.
      • We will all meet together at the end for a quick wrap up and easy online survey to complete.
      • Everyone will have nametags and be assigned to a group (I hope to have this to you by the end of the day Tuesday) to start the afternoon in that group.  Tables will have assignments, mathematical practice and the name of the facilitator.
  • Decide on next meeting date
    • look for email with a doodle.

If time:
  • Goals for the year
  • Parking lot items

November 24, 2013

November 24, 2013

Before school meeting:

  • Discussed math labs.  In the next two weeks, Molly and Sheila are going to check in with the 4th and 5th grade teachers regarding these intervention groups.  They will be finding out if there are students currently being served that may not need continued support and if there are students who are concerns that are not currently being supported.
    • Clare will meet with Sheila and Molly before the December break to go over these concerns.
    • However, for now, the groups will stay as they are, with the exception that Jacob S (and possibly Charlotte T) will not go to lab after school and will work with Margie before school 2x a week.
    • During the 4th grade Smartblock, Margie will be working with Jasper Goodwin (Mayberry), Olivia Kennedy (Gervais), Emily Ferilli (Gervais)
  • Just to reiterate, we are not going to be getting a new program in the next year or two, so we need to focus on how to support teachers with what they are currently using and modify if and when it is needed.
Next meeting, Monday, December 2, K-5 math mentors, MIW 3:15 pm
